Job Description

About Acutronic

The Acutronic Group has a proud history of building and investing in technologies and teams that are crucial to the aerospace, defense, and transportation industries. Acutronic employs approximately 300 employees across sites in Austin, Texas; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Switzerland; Germany; India; and France. Acutronic’s Aerospace Components Division manufactures specialty components for use on uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), land defense applications, and missile systems. These products are used on next-generation aerospace programs and include a range of electric power systems, servo actuators, micro-turbines, and Hybrid-Electric-Propulsion-Systems. Acutronic offers standard products and excels at designing highly customized solutions for demanding mission requirements.

Acutronic has been investing for the future since day one, showcased today by their new 14-acre test and manufacturing facility in Austin and $20MM+ invested into product line development and related infrastructure over the past six years. Acutronic counts most Primes as customers, is financially well positioned, and carries the elements of an innovative and dynamic startup in a growing marketplace.

Building on decades of market leadership, Acutronic Group launched its Aerospace Components Division in 2018, aiming to become the specialty component supplier of choice to the UAV industry. In 2019, Acutronic acquired Sullivan UV, a manufacturer of starters, alternators, and electronic control hardware that was founded in the late 1940s as a small manufacturer of control line products for model aircraft and later the radio control segment. In the late 1990s, Sullivan entered the expanding UAV market as Acutronic Power Systems, providing power systems and a range of other applications.

Acutronic launched its turbine business in 2018, as a joint-venture with BF Turbines out of Germany. This afforded Acutronic immediate access to an established product line of low-cost/hobby-grade micro[1]turbines. Acutronic augmented its turbine offering by establishing a domestic engineering team (located in Austin) and building a strong domestic supply chain to develop and produce mil-spec/tactical-grade turbojets and turbo-generators for the defense industry’s most demanding mission requirements. Acutronic has encountered considerable success with its turbine offering over the last few years and must now grow its team in order to keep up with market demand.

Core Values

Do Right – Acutronic cares about their customers, employees, partners, and the world at large. Acutronic thrives when they thrive. Their teams seek to deliver the right solutions, using the right technologies, at the right prices. Doing right also means paying attention to detail, being rigorous in all decisions, and having a passion to be the best. Above all, however, they believe that good ethics make good business.

Go Long – Acutronic values their long-term reputation over short-term results. They are always on the lookout for the next big problem to solve. They invest for the future and put resources behind ideas.

Serve Quick – Acutronic is responsive, dynamic, and modern. They are restless in the pursuit of growth, and they recognize that cash flow today enables growth tomorrow. Acutronic values team players who correct mistakes immediately, praise victories selflessly, and help each other constantly.

Purpose of the Position

Acutronic is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join the team in Austin. In this role, you will be responsible for the design, development, and optimization of fluid systems within gas turbine engines, ensuring their reliability, efficiency, and performance. The ideal candidate will have at least seven (7) years of relevant experience in designing advanced gas-turbine systems and components. This position and company offer the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of important parts of the aerospace and drone/UAV ecosystem, and the power generation industry.

This is an excellent gateway for a talented engineer with micro-turbine expertise to bridge the “doing” with the high-level of product development from design through production and delivery. The astute systems engineer that’s hands-on and eager to jump in and assist team members with technical challenges on a path towards delivery and completion will thrive at Acutronic. • Perform sizing and selection of critical fluid system components such as precision orifices, solenoids/valves, pumps, drives, fluid channels/tubing, etc.
  • Prepare, review, and approve fluid system schematics, calculations, models, Bills of Material, and acceptance test work instructions.
  • Prepare and present design review materials.
  • Prepare acceptance test procedures and writes system manuals.
  • Interface with customers during the design process and provides customer support after delivery.

1st Year Critical Success Objectives

  • Demonstrated success in Product Development – ability to lead process from design through production, and to Execute and Drive to completion.
  • Provide first principles engineering guidance, advice, and support to the team regarding technical and systems milestones and progress.
  • Recognized and applied depth in dynamics/thermodynamics, fluids, and heat transfer applications.
  • History of strengthening and supplementing the Engineering/IPT organization to execute on future programs; quick grasp of programs to produce a highly engineered finished product.
  • Track record of establishing a “home” in a dynamic organization – lead and mentor engineers; foster growth and culture through trust, communication, and continuous improvement.

IDEAL CANDIDATE EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in a related engineering environment.
  • A combination of education and turbine/systems experience will be considered.
  • Experience with CFD and other fluid analysis software; ANSYS preferred.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software; Siemens NX preferred.
  • An understanding of FAA certification process(es) is ideal but not required.
  • Must be a US Citizen or US Person/Permanent Resident.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • The selected candidate will receive an attractive compensation package consisting of a base salary and discretionary bonus.
  • Employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401k match; company paid holidays and paid time-off; and a 9/80 schedule.
  • Full relocation assistance provided.
